PROVIDING SOLAR AND WIND ENERGY SINCE 1974
LOCATED ON CAMANO ISLAND SINCE 1997

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR OWN "CLEAN & GREEN" ENERGY FUTURE!

Sun Wind Concepts has been in the solar business since 1974 and we have operated the business out of our residence on Camano Island since 1997. Since 1974 we have sold many wind and solar energy systems world-wide and have a good number of installations right here in
Washington: Batteryless grid-tied; back-up power; and off-grid independent systems. Our affiliate group of small businesses collaborate on system design, sales and installation. Together with Don's Electric on Camano Island and Fireplace Services of Arlington, we have formed a technically versatile and capable team -- with Sun Wind providing designs, marketing and product technical support for solar photovoltaics (solar electric), wind (also electric power) and solar hot water and heating systems. Each business provides specialized expertise -- and collaboration provides a wide range of services with a “team” approach. Since our businesses do not require the expense of retail outlets, prices are quite competitive! We are most often well below the prices of our competition. We provide product support, installation and service! Our affiliate group includes our main office, installation, and sales representatives and engineering support. We all work toward a common goal of customer support and work as business associates with a vested interest in customer satisfaction, rather than as employees. Sun Wind Concepts stands behind our products with full factory warranties as well as installation and workmanship warranties. Warranties on Photovoltaic Modules are typically from 20 to 25 years; Batteryless Inverters 10 years; Solar hot water and heating collector panels 10 years; Other associated components such as solar hot water storage tanks 5 year minimum up to 12 years; pumps and associated components 1 to 2 years; and installation and workmanship are warrantied for 1 to 2 years.

We also have a number of experimental projects for the DIY enthusiast posted in the latter portion of this site.

Visit us on the web or contact us by email or telephone at the Sun Wind location nearest you.  Call by land line telephone, cell phone, or Skype (by appointment), if a long call is needed.

Products are available for the United States and possessions only, unless otherwise noted. Systems and products may be ordered by money order, credit card check, certified check, business check, or personal check drawn on a U.S. bank. Checks may be subject to a waiting and clearing period before the order can be processed. For ordering and correspondence, please specify your shipping address, email address and phone number. Currently, the nature of our business benefits the customer by allowing us to provide discounts that otherwise would require an additional 2  & 1/2% for credit card transactions. This can be a significant savings -- especially for complete systems.

Sun Wind can provide installation cost information based on its experiences with various projects, but our contractors will provide you with an actual written estimate or quotation as dictated by contractor law and the necessities of the installation.

Payment for systems is expected prior to shipment. For regional systems installed by our contractors, we can provide an alternate payment schedule: 50% of the system cost down on solar, wind or hybrid systems (prepayment), 50% upon installation completion and testing. Installation costs are paid upon completion and testing directly to the installer.

Utility power failure
can be costly, annoying and at times dangerous. When you depend on the reliability of electricity, OutBack Power Systems back-up inverter/chargers can provide your home or business with automatic, reliable, and virtually noise free uninterrupted electricity. The OutBack modular system architecture allows your system to grow along with your back-up needs up to 36,000 watts from your battery bank. An integrated automatic AC transfer switch reacts in less than 16 milliseconds keeping mission critical systems like computers and medical equipment online. The intelligent battery charger maintains your batteries in a way that prolongs their life while ensuring they are quickly recharged and at the ready. When not being used, the inverter enters a power save mode, which consumes as little as 3 watts, saving your battery power for when you need it the most.

OUR LOCAL CLIMATE AND RESOURCES

Washington State is often thought of as cool, cold, cloudy and wet. It is -- at certain times! In spite of the over-generalized perception that we have poor solar potential  (especially in Western Washington), historically, Seattle has considerably more solar energy per square meter thoughout the year than many of the best solar sites in Germany, which is the world's highest implementer of solar power! Very large scale solar electric and solar heating projects are fully operational in Germany and many more are being built, even though they have less solar energy than we do!  Several 10 Megawatt solar photovoltaic installations are operational or being installed in Germany, one of which sits atop the famous Michelin Tire factory buildings!

According to climate records we receive much more energy in the summer (89% of what Los Angeles receives) than we do in winter. To even out seasonal production, Washington (and many other states) have passed net metering laws that allow credit for power produced during high solar energy yield periods. This credit can be applied to all electric bills during succeeding months, whether billed monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly. Thus, net metering smooths out the hills and valleys of the yearly energy cycle. Those having a net-metered system do not need battery banks as the utility becomes the 'energy storage bank' and solar implementers experience lower utility bills year-round!  It is possible for Energy efficient homes having gas hot water and heat (or solar thermal) to provide nearly or all of their electricity from their solar PhotoVoltaic system, if it is a large enough system.

    BE YOUR OWN POWER COMPANY

Take control of your utility bills -- forever! The energy you produce will not go up in price, nor will it contribute to our reliance on foreign oil! Producing your own power will reduce the amount of CO2 that power plants produce.

SOLAR AND WIND FAQS

straightenupandflyright.jpg

Above are Richard Layman and Leslie McGalliard of Ellensburg, Washington and their 1.8 kW array mounted on a WattSun tracker. This is part of a hybrid system which also boasts a 3 kW wind generator, a Xantrex 5.5 kW grid-tie and battery back-up inverter which feeds the utility. This system is very effective since both wind and solar resources are excellent in Ellensburg. After crediting their electric bill up to the full amount of their bill, Richard and Leslie can use any extra power to run their ceramic kiln or to power a portable electric space heater or two. This performance is unheard of, but is possible because the wind blows consistently and hard!

A single Xantrex Power Panel with two inverters can provide up to 11 kiloWatts of continuous power, provided it has charging sources with adequate capacity. These can even be combined to provide up to 33 kiloWatts!

Above: No, impossible! There is no sun in the Olympic rain forest!
Below: Sun Dog Power Company supplies Kelly and Sheri with their own power. They do have a back-up generator to charge the batteries during dark and rainy winter days. Power is collected by the panels even on cloudy days in proportion to the light level. Western WA receives between 3.5 and 3.8 hours of sun per day, averaged over a year, depending upon the location. Some rain forest sites have a little less, but in the summer they get a LOT of sun! Many systems are being installed in the "rain forest."

2nd photo above: A 36 panel, 3 array sun tracking system shown during the construction stage on Camano Island (now completed) --  Third & Fourth: A 2.4 kiloWatt Photovoltaic Grid Intertie system installed in Bellingham, Washington. Below: Wind generator and solar PV panels running Sun/Wind Offices.

Easy install, inspect or service! Sun/Wind's new design for a foldable tower enables owners to inspect their windgenerator without having to climb a tower. This installation provides an option which makes it feasible to install wind systems in locations that have not been previously possible. (We also have tilt-up towers that can be erected by pulling them up with a winch or vehicle to get the wind generator far up into the air  in rural settings.) The 'side of building' method works very well on outbuildings. The best method is to erect a 21' or longer length of standard 4" schedule 40 pipe.... Insert the bottom into a 2 1/2 foot hole and fill with earth directly below the roof's peak on the windward end of the building, then a tilt-up riser with a worm drive hand crank is added -- consult with us for the best specific site procedure. Add a 2 X 8 truss brace on a garage or barn for this type of installation and with the four inch pipe it can be installed WITHOUT guy wires to limited heights. (This one uses smaller 2" pipe and requires guy wires.) By using a hand crank boat winch the weight of the wind generator is always under control. This makes installation and service easier and safer and the wind generator is accessible from the roof. A level platform could be installed on a steep roof for easy access but with moderate sloped roofs it is not necessary.
